the national american indian and alaska native head start collaboration office (naianhsco) was created under public law 110‐134, “improving head start for school readiness act of 2007.” similar to the head start state collaboration offices, naianhsco works to identify potential partners for collaboration and communicates the needs of head start children and families. due to the unique relationship that sovereign american indian and alaska native (aian) entities hold with the federal government, this includes developing relationships with offices and organizations that are national in scope.
naianhsco is committed to assisting head start grantees in developing collaborative partnerships that will help improve the quality of life for aian children and families. naianhsco supports head start programs to create and develop partnerships in the following areas:
the st. croix tribal head start serves children living in and around the st. croix communities (with native american preference given), welcomes children with special needs and makes every effort to provide transportation to enrolled children. st. croix tribal head start provides a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack each day. annually the st. croix tribal head start partners with the st. croix tribal clinic to offer a “child health and wellness event” where all children who have applied to head start are seen for a head start physicals and wellness screening (hearing, nutrition, vision, dental, well-child, immunization, etc.
the st. croix tribal head start also partners with the seven school districts associated with tribal communities to provide services to children with special needs / individual education plans (iep) and 4k and kindergarten transitions. parents are encouraged to participate in head start by joining their child for all or part of a day to explore the classroom, sharing a meal or snack, volunteering with activities and offering support and guidance to the st. croix tribal head start program. head start events are planned regularly and provide shared family activities and build connections to community and culture.
