one of the questions i’m asked the most often over on instagram is the order of lessons for teaching your child to read. i put together all of my previous posts about learning to write and read the montessori way, so i’ll link them all here in the order in which they should be presented. in fact, the montessori child never even needs to learn her abcs — at least not the way they are traditionally taught. the montessori method teaches the child to write and read phonetically — the way the letters sound — rather than wasting time on the names we have given the letters. in addition to first preparing the ear, the hand is another part of the body that must be prepared before undertaking writing and reading.

the children spontaneously discovered that they knew how to write and started writing every word, everywhere. if you are encountering challenges with a child learning handwriting, look to the order within their mind. for example, in conversations at a picture, we go together with a child to a piece of art on the wall and guide them in talking about what they see. but the focus of this work is on tracing with the fingers and associating that shape with a sound. once the foundations of spoken language, letter-sound-knowledge, and intellectual writing are laid, we are ready to turn to handwriting.

then, we isolate a word from their rug and invite them to write it on the chalkboard. we do not correct the child but they will want to correct themselves. have plenty of writing and bookmaking supplies on hand so that the child is free to transcribe and create as their spirit drives them. the point is to encourage the refinement of their handwriting ability without drawing attention to the fact that they are lacking letter-sound or other knowledge. we give the child the keys and then they discover that they know how to write…and no one directly taught them. however, the neuroscience research suggests that cursive is preferred.
