early childhood lab

the early childhood laboratory, established in 1928, is a university-based center operated by the department of early childhood, special education and counselor education within the college of education. the early childhood laboratory has a three-part mission: we believe children learn by doing and that development is a process. as a result, the ecl offers programs for young children based on simple routines, careful planning, and developmental appropriateness. the ecl is an inclusive program. children with and without disabilities may be enrolled in each of the laboratory classes. the lead teachers are also responsible for supervising student teachers and practicum students working toward kentucky interdisciplinary early childhood certification.

our teachers actively participate in the professional organizations for young children and value growing as early childhood professionals. in addition to lead teachers and teaching assistants, our classrooms have early childhood majors fulfilling their practicum requirements. the ecl staff also includes a faculty director, who is a faculty member of the department of special education and rehabilitation counseling, an on-site staff director, and a staff assistant. applications are accepted throughout the year and class assignments are made in late march. due to the volume of applications received, parents are only notified if their child is chosen for enrollment in the program. decisions are based on the need to enroll children for a variety of ages, sex, social and economic background and developmental levels.

beginning fall quarter 2022, the ecl will be collaborating with the student reentry center in providing subsidized child care for uc davis student parents. in 2022-23 the ecl will open a new full day mixed-age preschool classroom, as well as having 6 full-day student family options in each of the current part-day infant and toddler classrooms. non-student family placements for the 2022-23 school year are wrapping up, although applications will continue to be accepted.

non-student applications for the onsite 2022-23 school year will be waitlisted. ccampis (low income student child care grant) continues to located on the uc davis campus at 238 1st street, the ecl provides a model early childhood program, a site for research and observation, and an educational experience for child development students. parents who enroll their children grant permission for their children to be part of the naturalistic observation research that takes place daily.
