one of the most important things we can do on the first day is to teach students how we want them to get along with one another and with you, the teacher. here are several cooperative learning activities that i use within the first week of school. i tend to do the interviewing on one day and the reporting out over a course of days. play continues until all students have gotten a turn and there is a web of string crisscrossing the circle.

reflect on how each person is part of the web, which represents the classroom, that you are all holding a piece of the classroom and without that piece, the classroom wouldn’t be complete. the beauty of this activity is that it provides students with some down time during a busy first day. do them throughout the year as you need to refocus students on how to get along in the classroom and how to think about each other. inside/outside circle is a good one to use for introduction activities at the start of the year but ialso love turn toss, quiz quiz trade and people hunt. i have students spend about 8 minutes at each poster, some less as the activity goes on.

cooperative learning is so important in the elementary classroom because it helps students become actively engaged in their learning process and improve their understanding of the content. after about 10 seconds, the teacher stops the music and says, “freeze.” the students stop and “freeze.” when everyone is still, the teacher will say, “pair.” the students will pair up with whoever is closest to them and then the teacher will announce the topic or question. then, after everyone has had time to discuss, the teacher says, “mix” and the activity starts again. then the teacher calls, “popcorn,” and students quickly and voluntarily pop-up from their chairs one at a time and share their answer. for this activity, the teacher would need to poll the class to see which students have a special knowledge to share. then students return to their seats and share what they learned. then students open the paper and draw a line down the crease. the teacher tells students to stand and find a partner.

have partner a answer the question and partner b ask why ___? then partner a has to give a thoughtful answer. then have groups share their strips and the thinking behind their choices. if desired, post the strips (sentences together, phrases together, and words together on their own chart paper) for students to view via a gallery walk. then, if desired, pose a new question and repeat. the group discusses the question or fact- if it wasn’t covered yet, they just return it to the bag and draw another one. students then discuss it and share. the students in that corner take notes and then return to their group to teach that information.
