head start is a free ($8,700 per year/per child value), comprehensive school readiness program which enhances the social, physical, and cognitive development of children. head start’s curriculum is evidence-based. eoc’s head start program is a full-day, full-school-year, holistic early childhood development program for children ages 3-5 from low-income families. it is recognized that, in order for children to thrive, they must have a healthy, stable home environment. a family assessment, communications between the teacher and parents, and home visits engage parents in their child’s learning and development. they receive training and referrals for community resources.

retrieval practice activities

the strategy of retrieval practice has been shown by research to be an extremely effective teaching and learning strategy time and time again. i often find that the insights students share on that sheet to be a better gauge of higher-level learning and thinking than their responses to the specific questions on the test! i tell my students that retrieval practice is the truest way to know what they know and what they don’t know, provided they don’t use any notes or peers for assistance. retrieval practice is an effective way to help students remember something they have previously learned to make new connections and boost learning. each session will have a different focus on the words they need to retrieve, revisit, and retain.

the national american indian and alaska native head start collaboration office (naianhsco) was created under public law 110‐134, “improving head start for school readiness act of 2007.” similar to the head start state collaboration offices, naianhsco works to identify potential partners for collaboration and communicates the needs of head start children and families. due to the unique relationship that sovereign american indian and alaska native (aian) entities hold with the federal government, this includes developing relationships with offices and organizations that are national in scope.
